Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma will appear before the Cebu City Council in an executive session on Monday to brief the local legislature on how the Cebu Archdiocese is preparing for the 2016 International Eucharistic Congress.
The City Council had passed a resolution exempting the Archdiocese from paying permit fees for the construction of a pavilion along John Paul II Ave. in barangay Luz which will be used to accommodate 15,000 delegates for the religious event.
The IEC, to be attended by top Catholic Church officials from other countries, will need extensive preparations for traffic, security and logistics for Cebu’s role as host.
Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, is invited to the IEC.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama earlier said the Cebu City government could not allocate funds for the event, but would assist organizers by providing manpower and logistical support.
Palma had written the City Council and sought an exemption from payment of permit fees for the pavilion that will rise inside the San Carlos Seminary compound.
He said Cebu City is honored to have been chosen as venue for the IEC. The last time the country hosted the congress was in Manila in 1937.
Palma mentioned the possibility of Pope Francis attending the event.
“Every pope’s visit to our country has always been a part of our nation’s history considering his stature, significance and standing in world affairs,” Palma said.
