Medellin, Danao, Dumanjug complete Gov’s Cup quarterfinals cast

CEBU CITY, Philippines— Fritz Saladaga came up with key baskets in overtime to help Medellin nip Tabuelan, 90-87, and win the 4th District title in the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament on Friday, April 5, 2019, in Medellin.

The wiry guard scored five of his 22 points in the extra session to help Medellin nab the district crown.

Luthek Leonard added 20 markers while diminutive guard Gelmart Umpad collected 19 points.

Danao City, meanwhile, won the 5th District championship with an 82-78 win over Sogod.

Five different players scored in double-figures for Danao City with Ace Rondina and Carl Molina each putting up 15 markers. Justin Mondares added 12 points.

Over in the 7th District, Dumanjug overhauled a huge double-digit deficit and stunned Alegria, 90-87, to capture the district title.

Clester Quinanola led the way for Dumanjug with 17 points while Jade Canete added 16 markers.

All district champion teams will be receiving P100,000 each.

Meanwhile, tournament organizers have already announced the brackets for the quarterfinal round.

In Bracket A are Dumanjug, Danao City, Medellin, Balamban, Argao, Samboan and the champion of the 6th District.

Bracket B will have Tuburan, Sogod, Minglanilla, Alegria, Talisay City, Tabuelan and the runner-up of the 6th District. /bjo
