El Niño: Cebu City under state of calamity
CEBU CITY, Philippines—The Cebu City has been placed under state of calamity due to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
The declaration of the state of calamity gives authority for the city to use funds to help barangays affected by the dry spell.
The Cebu City Council conducted a special session on Friday morning, April 12, 2019, to discuss the effects the El Niño.
During the special session, Councilor Jose Daluz III raised the concern that the City Disaster Risk Reduction Office (CDRRMO) has not provided a breakdown on how they will appropriate the P27 million calamity fund that will now be made available for the city.
The damages caused by the El Niño has reached P15 million and has affected agricultural products in 28 mountain barangays of Cebu City.
The City Council has requested the CDRRMO to submit a breakdown of the appropriation in order to identify how the funds will be allocated. /bmjo
