Cebu City, Philippines—At least 17 houses were burned down in a fire that broke out in Sitio Drihoa, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City on Monday morning, April 22, 2019.

The fire alarm was received at 8:25 a.m. and was immediately raised to third alarm at 8:32 a.m. It was declared under control at 9:02 a.m.

According to fire officials, initial investigation revealed that the fire started in an electric post near the house of a Raffy Rapsing.

Authorities are still investigating further the cause of the fire.

Fire officer 2 Nielson Daculan said that it was quite challenging to put out the fire because firefighters had a difficult time penetrating the area due to the narrow roads. He said they were able to access the area through nearby government offices.

Barangay Lahug Captain Hazel Muaña said that they will conduct an emergency session this afternoon to tackle issues regarding the victims of the fire.

The council will set the Lahug Central Elementary School gym as the evacuation area. /bmjo
