Lorega fire victims to still get free food

The Cebu City government will continue giving packed meals to fire victims in barangay Lorega until they are relocated, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said yesterday.

In yesterday’s press conference, Rama said it would be unsafe for them to prepare their own meals at the three evacuation centers they were housed in.

The fire victims are staying at the gym of the Sacred Heart for Boys School located along General Maxilom Avenue, the Lorega sports center and the Zapatera sports center.

Last week’s fire displaced 1,500 families or some 5,000 individuals.

“We will continue the distribution of packed meals until such time that they are relocated,” the mayor said.

The Cebu City government is already working on the re-blocking of the fire site in Lorega to ensure that an access road will be built in the thickly-populated area.

Rama said he also wanted the satellite market in the area relocated so that   some order might be achieved.

He said he’s looking for a private sector donor willing to help the city relocate the barangay’s satellite market.

Lorega barangay chairman Fritz Herrera wants the re-blocking completed as soon as possible so the fire victims could rebuild their homes.

Herrera is also worried that their prolonged stay in the evacuation centers would further put a strain on the  facilities and barangay personnel in the area.

“With their concerns in mind, we are always around to help,”  Rama said.
