Cebu is among the top producers of medical doctors as the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) ranked first among 38 medical schools in the country with Cebu Doctors’ University listed as  fourth.

CIM posted 100 percent passing rate in the last two medicine licensure examinations, a feat it shares with three Metro Manila-based schools, namely,  University of the Philippines-Manila, Pamantasan ng Lungsod Maynila and Ateneo de Manila University.

University of Santo Tomas ranked second with 98.88 percent passing rate. The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center ranked third with 96.80 percent. Cebu Doctors’ University came in fourth with 95.74 percent.

The ranking of top medical schools was announced by Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, House committee on higher and technical education chairman.

The House committee on higher and technical education has credited the nation’s leading schools for doctors of medicine, based on the outstanding performance of their graduates in the last two Physician Licensure Examinations administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), said a press statement from Romulo’s office.

Citing PRC statistics, Romulo said at least 80 percent of the examinees who graduated from the above-mentioned 11 schools passed the last two Physician Licensure Examinations.

As a public service, Romulo’s panel has been publicizing the best performing universities for every program, so as to help consumers — students and their parents — decide where they will likely get the best value for college tuition payments.

Commission on Higher Education records show that the country has 38 higher institutions of learning accredited to train prospective doctors.

According to the PRC, some 74.65 percent, or 2,259 out of 3,026 examinees, passed the Physician Licensure Examinations in February 2014 and August 2013.
