CEBU CITY, Philippines — Two firetrucks and at least 50 personal protective equipment (PPE) were donated by the the municipal government of Xiamen Municipal People’s Government from China to Cebu City to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the sisterhood agreement between the two cities.
Xiamen government officials visited Cebu City on Thursday, October 31, to celebrate the relationship forged between the two cities in 1984 and brought the gifts to show their continued support to Cebu City, according to Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella.
The trucks and the PPE were handed over to the Cebu Filipino-Chinese Volunteers Fire Brigade, Inc.
Labella expressed gratitude to his counterparts from the Chinese city saying that the firetrucks will help augment the needs of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Cebu City whenever there are fire incidents or other emergency situations.
“We sincerely thank Xiamen for the firetrucks in this fire-prone city,” said Labella.
Labella promised the officials of Xiamen that a street at the North Reclamation Area (NRA) will be named after Xiamen as a gesture of friendship.
The ordinance naming a street at the NRA as Xiamen Street is still pending approval before the Cebu City Council.
As the two cities moves forward with its relationship, Labella said he is hoping for more coordination and cooperation between Xiamen and Cebu City in the future.
