CEBU CITY, Philippines—Police from Dumanjug town in southwestern Cebu killed an ex-convict in a shootout that stemmed from a buy bust operation late Wednesday evening, February 19, 2020.

Alvin Dinopol, who was said to be in his 40s, was shot dead after he allegedly tried to escape a buy bust operation in Barangay Lawaan III in Dumanjug.

Police Major Ardioleto Cabagnot, Dumanjug Police Office chief, said Dinopol, also a resident in the area, was the subject of their buy-bust operation.

He said Dinopol fired first, prompting the police officers to fire back at him.

“After the shootout, we called the emergency medical team, who told us that he (Dinopolo) was already dead,” Cabagnot said in Cebuano.

The police chief of Dumanjug town said Dinopol was formerly convicted of drug charges.

“We recently learned that he was still into illegal drugs. And we’ve been monitoring him for more than a month that led us to conduct a buy-bust operation,” added Cabagnot.

A .45 revolver with several live ammunition and a small transparent sachet believed to contain shabu were recovered from the crime scene. /bmjo
