The Cebu City Council will hold a session with an Austrian firm which proposed to put up cable cars in Cebu City on May 21.
Councilor Gerardo Carillo, who filed a resolution calling for an executive session with Norbet Feuerstein of the Doppelmayr Urban Transport System, said a cable car transport system is beneficial to those living in the mountain barangays.
Feuerstein wrote the City Council last May 13 seeking an audience with the council to present his company’s proposal.
He said their company built more than 14,400 installations for customers in over 88 nations.
But Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the use of cable cars should be limited to tourism and not for mass transport.
“Usahay ug mag tan-aw ka sa cable cars, kinsa may mo sakay ana nga naa man tay (Sometimes when we watch cable cars, who would ride it when we have an) inherent fear of heights? Cable cars are just for thrills but not (fit) for public transport,” he said.
Rama said having cable cars in the city is “not a practical approach” to the city’s traffic congestion problems and it can destroy the city’s aesthetics and heritage value.
“I’d rather that we keep our simplicity rather than go for sophistication and destroy our heritage,” he said.
