Consolacion inmate bolts jail on a rainy night

An inmate took advantage of the heavy downpour Tuesday night and escaped from his detention cell in Consolacion Police Station, northern Cebu.

The freedom, however, was short-lived after Lester Alfornon was recaptured in a manhunt operation Wednesday night in barangay Guinsay, Danao City.

Alfornon is a resident of barangay Catarman, Liloan town.

Alfornon escaped by ripping off the ceiling of the cell and destroying the metal sheets of the stockade’s roof, said SPO2 Socrates Borinaga, desk office of the Consolacion Police Station.

The stockade is adjacent to the police station in barangay Poblacion Occidental.

The escape was discovered by PO1 Albert Jimenez. There were two inmates in the stockade but only Alfornon escaped.

After escaping, Alfornon stole a bicycle which he used in going to Guinsay where he has relatives, said Senior Insp. Cesar Misola of the Danao City Police Station.

Alfornon is facing charges of violating Republic Act (RA) 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and RA 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Alfornon was arrested Sunday afternoon after he allegedly stole scrap metals in Redwood Subdivision in barangay Tayud, Consolacion town.

Police said it was the subdivision’s security guard who caught the suspect.

Police said at least 10 hand-rolled marijuana sticks and a bullet of a 9mm pistol were recovered from Alfornon’s possession.
