3 dead, 1 missing in Agusan del Sur due to TD Vicky, says governor
MANILA, Philippines — Three people have died while one was reported missing in Agusan del Sur due to tropical depression Vicky, its governor said Sunday.
“Sadly as of yesterday afternoon may reported na tatlong namatay (there are three reported deaths). The cause of death was drowning at isang (and one) missing person po,” Governor Santiago Cane Jr. said over ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.
According to Cane, two of the fatalities had attempted to cross a river, while the other, an employee of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, forced his motorcycle to cross a flooded highway with his wife.
The motorcycle, however, was carried away by the flood.
“Buti na lang ‘yung asawa niya was rescued by residents of the area, while the husband ay hindi po nakita on that very afternoon. ‘Yung bangkay niya ay nakita na lang the following day, yesterday,” said Cane.
(Fortunately, his wife was rescued by residents in the area, but the body of the husband was not found that afternoon. His body was only found the following day, which was yesterday.)
Cane said that the downpour of rain experienced by the province due to Vicky was “quite strong” and “very heavy.”
But currently, most areas in the province were already cleared of floodwater.
“Inasikaso na lang namin ‘yung mga evacuees na hindi pa nakakauwi sa kanilang mga bahay dahil ‘yung iba ay nawalan ng bahay, ‘yung iba ‘yung mga bahay nila ay still under water,” the governor said.
(We are just taking care of evacuees who have lost their homes and whose houses are still under water.)
