Cebu City’s 84th Charter Day to be celebrated virtually
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebu City will continue to organize Charter Day activities this year but this will already be done virtually.
The city is set to celebrate its 84th Charter Day on February 24, a special nonworking holiday here.
In a press conference this Tuesday morning, February 2, Mayor Edgardo Labella said that the city will continue to recognize outstanding employees and individuals who contributed to the city’s progress. But the recognition will be done virtually this year because of the pandemic.
In fulfilment of a promise which he made last year, Labella said that the city government will also recognize and award a P100, 000 cash incentive to 11 barangays who managed to remain COVID-free.
Labella is urging Cebuanos to watch the city’s Charter Day celebration that will be streamed live using its social media accounts.
Traditionally, the Cebu City government would organize various activities for its annual Charter Day celebration that would start with a flag raising ceremony at the Plaza Sugbu and the recognition of outstanding City Hall employees.
A gala is also held at night to recognize outstanding individuals and establishments.
But due to the pandemic, Labella said they decided to forego some of the annual Charter Day activities and organize a simpler online celebration this year.
“Because of the pandemic, our Charter Day celebration will be different this year. We will still have awarding, but we will do this virtually,” said the mayor.
Cebu City remains under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) because of the continuing rise in active cases of the coronavirus disease.
Active cases here already reached more than a thousand.
