PCAP online chess games resume Wednesday

CEBU CITY, Philippines—Games in the All-Filipino Conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament will resume Wednesday, February 24, 2021. 

The games were supposedly scheduled for last Saturday, February 20, but bad weather due to tropical storm Auring postponed them.

The country’s largest online chess tournament features 24 professional chess teams in the north and south divisions. Games are played virtually. 

For Wednesday’s virtual games, Cebu’s very own teams; the Toledo City Trojans, Cebu City Marchers, Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors, and the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, continue their respective campaigns with tough tasks ahead of them. 

The Trojans, the highest-seeded Cebu-based team in the fourth place, will face the north division’s bottom-seeded Cagayan Kings (4-15, W-L) in their first match. They are gunning to upset the North division’s third seed Laguna Heroes (16-3) in the second match. The Trojans have 11 wins and seven defeats on hand. 

The Trojans are manned by  International Master (IM) Rico Mascariñas, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Jinky Catulay, Bonn Rainauld Tibod, Christopher Tubalado, Rommel Ganzon, Ronald Ganzon, Rogelio Enriquez Jr, Jean Jean Gacang, and Richard Natividad. 

Meanwhile, the Naki Warriors, the seventh seed in the south division with an 8-11 (win-loss) card, face seventh-seed  Pasig City King Pirates (9-10) in the first match. They go up against 11th seed Quezon City Simba’s Tribe (4-15) in the second match. The team comprises National Master (NM) Merben Roque, Bryle Arellano, Cristy Cabungcag, Odilon Badilles, Robeo Resuera, Neil Adrian Gilig, Aldwin Daculan, and Kraig Quinain. 

The south division’s eighth-seeded Dutchess Dagami Warriors (6-12) will square off against the North division’s fifth seed Manila Indios Bravos (13-6) in their first match. They will face sixth seed Cavite Spartans (9-10) in the second game. The team is composed of NM Edsel Montoya, Allan Pason, Women’s International Master (WIM) Bernadette Galas, NM Mario Mangubat, Rex Cabungcal, Francis Rivera, Ariel Potot, and Dione Patrick Miñoza.  

The Marchers, on the other hand, go up against the Spartans and 9th seed Isabela Knight Raiders in the first and second matches, respectively. The Marchers, currently ranked at 10th place with a 4-15 record in the south division, is played by NM Erwin Retanal, NM Anthony Makinano, Marphine Faith Mangubat, NM Lincoln Yap, Mark Mangubat, Cephas Seguisabal, Eduard Dela Torre, and Randy Cabungcal.
