CEBU CITY, Philippines — More inter-local government unit (LGU) jeepneys may soon enter Cebu City as Mayor Edgardo Labella has agreed to allow the jeepneys from Mandaue City and Talisay City to ply the city’s streets.

Labella told reporters in a phone interview that he has received the recommendations of the Cebu City Jeepney Task Force (JTF) that favors the entry of the Mandaue City and Talisay City jeepneys into the city.

“We will now allow the jeepneys from Mandaue City to enter Cebu City provided they will comply with the minimum health protocols and the guidelines of the LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB),” said the mayor.

The mayor said this is one way of helping Cebu City workers who are residents of the neighboring cities to travel faster and more conveniently to their workplaces.

Labella said that the JTF recommended increasing the number of jeepneys entering the city with respect to the LTFRB protocols as they already noticed more workers returning to their offices in Cebu City.

The mayor also hopes this would help improve the economic movement in the city with unemployed workers being encouraged to take jobs in the city with the availability of more public transports among the three cities.

The Executive Order (EO) will be released tomorrow, March 12, 2021, and Labella said the implementation may be on Monday, March 15, 2021.

Councilor James Cuenco, the head of the JTF, said the jeepneys who will be allowed entry to Cebu City will no longer go through additional processes from the City Transportation Office.

The councilor said that their permits from the LTFRB will suffice. /rcg
