Sunny weather shone on the 177 junior triathletes seeing action in the Alaska Ironkids competition early this morning at the posh Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

Last year, two age group categories were canceled due to bad weather. Today, the prelude race before tomorrow’s Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines ended on a high note. Fil-German Arno Baetz defended his title in the 13-14 years old division.

The Hong Kong-based Baetz clocked in a time of 31 minutes and 32 seconds and was trailed by Cebuano Yuan Chiongbian who finished with a time of 32:13 and Brent Valelo of Caloocan City with 32:42. Quezon City’s Nicole Danielle Eijansantos topped the 13-14 year-old category distaff side with a time of 34:47 followed by Lauren Justine Plaza of Laguna with a time of 35:54. Cebuana Aaliyah Mataragnon rounded off the top three with 36:25.
