CEBU CITY, Philippines — A female detainee was found dead inside the detention cell of Punta Princesa Police Station on Wednesday evening, June 16, 2021.

The detainee apparently killed herself using her clothes to strangle herself, said Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director of operation of the Cebu City Police Office, during a press briefing on Thursday, June 17.

Parilla said that Marie Ann Negro, 39, a resident of Barangay Quiot, Cebu City, was alone in the cell while awaiting the result of her swab test when she apparently took her own life.

He said that the female detainee was arrested earlier that day for illegal drugs and was detained at the police station’s detention cell.

“Siya ra usa sa selda kay ang atong proseso ron sa mga dinakpan, specially sa drugs, ato usa i-isolate usa iipon sa mga daan dinakpan,” he added.

(She was alone in a cell because our process for those arrested, specially for illegal drugs, is that they are isolated first before we let them join other detainees in a cell.)

Despite the account of the custodial police officer of the detention cell, Parilla said they would still investigate the incident to determine if there was foul play or not in the victim’s death.

“Ato ni siyang ipa-undergo og autopsy, and then mangayo sad ta og result sad sa Crime Lab nga maoy nag-process sa crime scene,” he said.

(We will have her undergo an autopsy and then we will also ask the result of the police officers of the Crime Lab. who processed the crime scene.)
