4-day work week needs further study

A plan to change the work schedule of government employees to only four days a week be studied well, said acting Cebu City mayor Edgar Labella.

Labella said he would rather adopt a flexible time scheme for City Hall employees.

“We should rather give emphasis on flexi time rather than reduce the work schedule because many basic services would be paralayzed,” he said.

Labella said that another consideration is how to implement the four-day work week among public school teachers which could be reducing the number of school days.

Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles, chairman of the house committee on labor, is proposing the implementation of the four-day work week, especially among government offices in Metro Manila to address traffic congestion problems.

The scheme is also seen as a means to save on energy consumption, especially in Mindanao that is now faced with power shortage.

“I think that needs a thorough study. But for now, I don’t think that is feasible,” said Labella.
