The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers shocked the reigning UAAP champions National University (NU) as they leaned on a fantastic finishing kick to take down the Bulldogs, 77-74, in the Elite Eight stage of the 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Lancers trailed by as many as 16 and were still down 71-72 after the Bulldogs scored five straight but the many-time Cebu champions refused to back down.

Rhaffy Octobre made the equalizing free-throw then missed the second but the offensive rebound went to Steve Akomo, who put it back for a 74-72 UV lead.

NU pushed the ball up quickly but Gelo Alolino’s attempt was rejected by Akomo, leading to an uncontested lay-in for Octobre for a 76-72 lead with 16.4 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs had a glimmer of hope after Alolino was fouled while shooting a triple but he made just two of three to trim the deficit to two, 74-76, with 9.1 ticks to go.

On UV’s inbound, NU trapped Josue Segumpan into a corner and forced a jumpball between the latter and Glenn Khobuntin. UV won the tip and John Abad was sent to the charity stripe where he split his charities to seal the upset victory.

UV now has a 1-1 (win-loss) record in this stage, while NU holds a 0-1 mark. The top two teams after this single round-robin phase advances to the championship round.

The win was the first for UV’s newly installed head coach Gary Cortes after losing to La Salle last Friday.

UV’s Abad led all scorers with 18 points while Franz Arong added 17 markers.

Troy Rosario had 16 to pace the Bulldogs while Alolino had 14.

SAN BEDA ESCAPES USC

While the UAAP champs got upset by A Cebu team, San Beda College, ruler of the NCAA, avoided the same fate.

The Red Lions survived a late rally by Cebu’s University of San Carlos (USC) and won, 85-75.

Art dela Cruz led the Red Lions with 23 points and sparked a pivotal 14-2 run in the fourth that sealed the victory, San Beda’s first in this round.

USC trailed by as many as 20 against the five-time NCAA champions but managed to tie the game at 67-all in the fourth before Dela Cruz came alive and dealt the Warriors their first loss in three games.
