Red Lions down Archers in Game 1 of PCCL Finals

The San Beda Red Lions moved to a win away from claiming the national collegiate title as they upended the defending titlists La Salle Green Archers 88-81 in Game 1 of the best-of-three finals series yesterday at the Ynares Sports Center.

Showing grit and talent that has pushed them to become the most dominant squad in the NCAA, the Red Lions leaned on a decisive fourth period breakaway to snatch the victory and come closer to their very firsr PCCL crown.

Nigerian big man Ola Adeogun had 20 points, seven boards and two blocks to lead the Red Lions while crafty guard Baser Amer had an all-around showing of 19 points, seven assists, three boards and two swipes. Former La Salle guard Dan Sara chipped in 15 spiked by four triples even as Art dela Cruz added 14.

Ben Mbala led La Salle with 26 markers, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Jeron Teng was held down to just nine on 3-of-11 shooting.

San Beda eyes the sweep and the title in Game 2 on Monday. Meanwhile, it was announced that the battle for third place between Cebu teams University of the Visayas and the University of San Carlos will be on Monday as well.
