Quincentennial marker installed on Ponson Island in Pilar town
MANDAUE CITY, Philippines – A historical marker has been installed on Ponson Island in Pilar town.
The marker that was provided by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is located at the border of Barangays Lower Poblacion and Upper Poblacion, which is the center of Pilar town.
Its location is close to the Pilar Central School and the town’s Roman Catholic Church.
The installation of the marker was made last December 12, the municipal government said in an advisory.
The quincentennial marker in Ponson Island is one of the 30 historical markers that were installed along the path of the first ocean voyage around the world by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano in 1521 as mentioned in the manuscript of Antonio Pigafetta.
The installation of the 30 markers was among the highlights of the 500th year anniversary of the first voyage.
Pilar Mayor Winkey Santiago and Municipal Engineer Robertson Borinaga led the installation of the historical marker.
In a message which he delivered during the installation ceremony, Santiago said, the historical marker will serve as a reminder for all Pilaranons that Ponson Island, despite its small size, is a big part of the world’s history.
