Cebu City DMDP seeks P43.7 million office budget for 2023

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) has proposed a P43.7 million budget for 2023, with the bulk of the budget allocated to jumpstart the proposed Cebu City College.
DMDP head Fidel Magno defended the department’s proposed annual budget on Monday, December 12, 2022, as part of the ongoing marathon hearings for the proposed P50 billion budget of the executive department for 2023.
The department’s proposed budget for 2023 is about 33-percent higher compared to its P32,651,422.72 allocation in 2022.
Magno said the bulk of their requested budget for next year will be allocated for the start of the Cebu City College, which is part of the current administration’s executive-legislative agenda (ELA).
Magno said renovation works for the building that used to be Ramos Public Market in Barangay Cogon Ramos are already underway for the college.
“Naa may budget nga gibutang no, gitrabaho man ng DMDP karon. Naa na siyay budget ana; however, kung muingon kag eskwelahan, kinahanglan naa man gyod iyang facilities, like library, clinic, dapat naa na man na. Even mga white boards. Muingon kag P20 million, kuwangon pa gani na. As a start lang, kana lang usang P20 million for this year,” he told the council.
Another major allocation from the department’s proposed budget next year is the P10.5 million appropriation, which would be used to upgrade tools and equipment for its various course offerings.
“Dako-dako na budget, kining para upgrade sa tools and equipment sa DMDP, including the facilities para ma maintain nato ang registration nato with TESDA…Almost yearly man gud, mag-upgrade ilang (TESDA) yearly regulation. Kung di nato, ma-upgrade, tabla ra’g nihatag ta og skills training program sa atong mga constituents which is not updated,” he added.
Moreover, P5 million of the DMDP’s proposed budget is allocated for its livelihood and entrepreneurship program, which, he said, covers the distribution of starter kits for its beneficiaries.
The DMDP, he said, wants to encourage city’s constituents to train and work as carpenters, and the city will be supporting it by providing the free training and kits.
The department, currently, has 18 course offerings, with housekeeping as the most number of enrollees.
For 2022, the DMDP produced 1, 292 graduates.
