CEBU CITY, Philippines – One died and another remains confined in a hospital after a motorcycle and dump truck were involved in an accident in Mandaue City on Tuesday dawn, May 2, 2023.

Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Mandaue City Police Office confirmed that a fatal road accident happened along M.C. Briones Street in Brgy. Tabok around 3 a.m.

The victim was identified as Joann Haroy Madelo, who suffered multiple serious injuries on her head, arms, and legs, said Police Staff Sergeant Jimson Dapar.

Madelo and her live-in partner, Anjon Gulfan, were apparently on their way home to Lapu-Lapu City. Gulfan was driving the motorcycle with Madelo as his back rider.

The truck driver, identified as Ramelito Baculi, is now under police custody.

Citing initial investigation, Dapar said both the motorcycle and dump truck were traversing the southbound lane of M.C Briones Street around 3 a.m.

The motorcycle was on the outer lane while the truck was on the inner lane, he added.

According to police findings, the truck switched lanes in an attempt to overtake a vehicle ahead, not knowing there was a motorcycle on its right side.

“The truck driver apparently did not see the motorcycle. He may also not have noticed that he had already hit it,” Dapar explained in Cebuano.

With the move, Gulfan’s motorcycle fell on the pavement and was dragged a few feet by the truck that reportedly continued to drive along the road.

Dapar said that another motorcycle driver chased Baculi, the truck driver, and flagged him down to inform him that he had hit a motorcycle and its passenger.

Gulfan and Madelo were rushed to a hospital but physicians declared the latter dead on arrival.

The driver and the passenger of the motorcycle just came from Daanbantayan, a first-class town located at the northernmost tip of Cebu, he said.

“The victim was also carrying a sack of bananas from the town which they intend to give to their families back in Lapu-Lapu City,” he added.

In the meantime, police continue to conduct investigations to determine who was at fault in the tragedy.
