Can exes still be friends?

CEBU CITY, Philippines— Whether exes should be friends or not is a subjective matter and depends on individual circumstances and feelings.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

To be at peace with the breakup is different from staying connected with the ex-partner.

In a recent event for a luxurious brand, ex-celebrity couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre were seen being civil with each other.

James approached Nadine and leaned in for a “beso.”

Both of the exes posed for a photo together with other celebrities, like Anne Curtis and Liza Soberano.

CDN Digital asked the Siloys what they think about ex-partners being friends.

While others are okay with being friends with their exes, others have a different take, maybe due to some factors.

Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether or not to be friends with an ex:

  • Emotional Well-being: Consider how the friendship would impact your emotional well-being. If being friends with your ex brings you happiness, and support, and doesn’t negatively affect your mental health, it might be a good choice.
  • Mutual Agreement: Both parties should be on the same page about maintaining a friendship. If one person is not comfortable with the idea, it can lead to complications.
  • Reasons for the Breakup: The circumstances surrounding the breakup can play a significant role. If the breakup is amicable and both parties still have respect and care for each other, it can be easier to remain friends.
  • New Relationships: Consider how being friends with an ex might impact your current or future romantic relationships. Some people may be uncomfortable with their partner maintaining a close friendship with an ex.
  • Time and Space: Taking some time apart after a breakup to heal and gain perspective can be beneficial. Rushing into a friendship immediately after a breakup might not be the best idea.
  • Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries in the friendship to avoid confusion or misunderstandings. Be open and honest about what you expect from the relationship.
  • Feelings: Be honest with yourself about your feelings. If you still have romantic feelings for your ex, being friends might be challenging and could hinder your ability to move on.

Let this line from Mandy Moore’s hit song “Can We Still Be Friends?” help you decide.

“Heartbreak’s never easy to take butCan we still be friends?

Ultimately, the decision to be friends with an ex is a personal one. Some people successfully maintain close, platonic friendships with their exes, while others find it too challenging or emotionally complicated.
