Accident at SRP: Motorcycle rider killed after getting pinned by van

A motorcycle rider was killed after getting crushed by a refrigerated van while traversing along the Cebu South Coastal Road

Isagani Alvarado, 33, and a resident of Aloguinsan town in southwestern Cebu died after he was crushed by a refrigerated van that lost control while traveling along the Cebu South Coastal Road.

Jonathan Tumulak, chief of the City of Talisay Traffic Operations and Development Authority (CT-TODA), told CDN Digital in a phone interview that the driver of the refrigerated van allegedly lost control of his vehicle due to the slippery road. It was raining hard in Cebu City at the time of the accident.

When the van went out of control, it toppled and unfortunately fell on the motorcycle rider.

Special mosquitoes are being bred to fight dengue

In Honduras, a new approach to combat dengue is challenging old beliefs. Instead of fearing mosquitoes and avoiding their bites, residents are now learning about a more effective method to control the disease.

Recently, Tegucigalpa resident Hector Enriquez excitedly released millions of specially bred mosquitoes into his neighborhood, El Manchen, a dengue-prone area. These mosquitoes carry Wolbachia bacteria, which disrupt dengue transmission. When they reproduce, they pass this bacteria to their offspring, reducing future outbreaks.

This innovative strategy, developed by the nonprofit World Mosquito Program over the past decade, is being tested in numerous countries. Given that over half the world’s population is at risk of dengue, the World Health Organization is closely monitoring these mosquito releases in Honduras and other locations, with plans to promote the strategy worldwide.

Apparently, even cartoon characters can pass SIM registration, IT expert reveals

In other news, aside from animals, even cartoon and anime characters could register subscriber identity module (SIM) cards without a sweat, Information Technology expert Mike Santos showed on Thursday.

Santos, an invited resource person, demonstrated how scammers could register SIM cards using the identities of cartoon and anime characters in a press conference held by the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC).

Based on the actual test he conducted, Santos was able to register a Globe SIM in less than three minutes under the identity of the cartoon character “Bart Simpson” from the animated comedy “The Simpsons.”

Another test conducted in a Smart SIM — but this time using the face and name of “One Piece” anime character “Monkey D. Luffy” — yielded the same result.
