Batch 2003, 2009 grab crucial wins in Damazo Cup Season 13

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Batch 2003 and Batch 2009 continued their ascend in the team standings of the ongoing University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) High School Alumni-Damazo Cup Season 13 on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at the USJ-R Basak campus. 

This as Batch 2003 nipped Batch 2001, 88-78, to grab their fifth win in six games to place them at the No. 2 spot in Division 1. 

Joining them on the winning side was Batch 2009 that defeated Batch 2020, 83-70. The win improved Batch 2009’s record to 3-2 (win-loss) to put them at the No. 3 spot in Division 2. 

During the game, Ralvie Pogoy once again led Batch 2003 in scoring after he fired 18 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and one steal.

His teammate, Jose Reyes, also had a stellar outing after grabbing a double-double game of 11 points with 10 rebounds. He also tallied two assists and one block. 

Shield Alberto and Elwin Abellana scored 22 and 20 points, respectively, but that wasn’t enough to put Batch 2001 on the winning side. Jesson Tabarno chipped in 15 in Batch 2001’s losing efforts. 

Batch 2009’s Jake Emerson Diamante topscored the game by erupting with 38 points with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Fritz Patrick Bayno added 15 points in Batch 2009’s big win.

Christian Amaba, Ronnel Corbeta, and John Butiong scored 19, 18, and 14 points, apiece as Batch 2020 absorbed their second loss in six games in Division 2. 

On the other hand, Batch 1996 routed Batch 1994, 105-94, behind Kenneth Maningo’s 19-point outing.

His teammates John Paul Alcaraz had 16 points, while Eric Alison added 12 markers. Melecio Villaplaza, Ernesto Medalle, and Oscar Quiachon each contributed 11 points in their victory.

Ian Rosello and Cris Villanueva scored 23 and 22 points, apiece, in Batch 1994’s losing efforts. 

Also winning the game on Sunday was Batch 1997 after defeating Batch 1992, 67-57, with Hentjie Cabo pacing the winning squad with a double-double performance of 27 points, 21 rebounds, with five asssits, one steal, and one block.
