Cesafi Season 23: UC Webmasters take on Verallo Dragons, eye 5-0 slate
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters men’s basketball team guns for the solo lead in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) Season 23 cage wars on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Webmasters have an immaculate 4-0 (win-loss) record, identical with the defending champions, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers.
Dragons still winless in Cesafi
They are the two remaining unbeaten teams among the 11 competing in the college division.
Tomorrow, they will be facing the newcomer, the Felipe R. Verallo Foundation College (FRVFC) Blue Dragons at 6:00 p.m.
The Blue Dragons is the only team in the college division with zero wins. They’ve lost all their five previous games putting them on the bottom of the team standings.
Their most recent defeat was in the hands of this season’s dark horse, the University of San Jose-Recoletos, 44-81, last Saturday, October 21.
Webmasters beat Panthers
Meanwhile, the Webmasters of head coach Lawyer Kenneth Kernn Atilano Sesante took care of one of their rival schools, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF)Panthers, 62-52, last Sunday, to grab their fourth straight win.
The Webmasters will heavily rely on Luther Leonard, Jasper Pacana, Michael Diaz, Jhey Paraldo, and John Regie Dajab.
They will also field their promising rookies in Maverick Eligoyo and John Linares.
Meanwhile, the Blue Dragons of former CAAA champion coach Norberto “Titing” Manalili will have Kean Planco and John Gellego as their main gunners.
On the other hand, the high school defending champions, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, plan to stretch their winning streak to five games.
This as they take on the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves at 5:00 p.m.
The Magis Eagles are fresh from a lopsided, 88-41 win over the City of Bogo Science and Arts Academy (CBSAA) Trailblazers last Sunday in a game marred with multiple suspensions.
Aballe gets 2 game suspension
Franz Jefferey Aballe of the Trailblazers was slapped with a two-game suspension, P10,000 fine, and a four-hour community service.
It was after he was “intentionally causing physical harm to Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagle Nicolas Yu.”
Also, three referees who supervised that game was suspended for failing to make the necessary calls during the game.
The Magis Eagles currently has a 4-1 card, while DBTC has a 1-5 slate.
DBTC earned their lone victory in the high school division after the Cesafi officials overturned USP-F Baby Panthers’ October 8 win against them.
This was after the Cesafi caught one of USP-F’s players having played in an outside league which violated one of their rules and regulations.
Jared Bahay and Jelomar Rota are expected to put up big numbers against the Greywolves tomorrow.
