At least 23 barangays in Cebu’s second district received more than P6 million in financial assistance last month, some of which experienced the wrath of tropical depression Queenie in November last year.
Barangays in Samboan, Argao, Malabuyoc, Boljoon and Badian were among the recipients of the cash assistance from the provincial development fund last March 19.
Barangays Ubaub and Linut-od in Argao, received P200,000 and P100,000, respectively. The assistance will be used for the rehabilitation of damaged roads and footbridges.
After experiencing heavy floods in the wake of at least three typhoons that hit the province during the last quarter of 2014, barangay Calagasan officials plan to purchase materials for the construction of culverts along creeks to avoid flooding in the future.
Four barangays in Malabuyoc town— Poblacion Uno, Salmeron, Sorsogon, and Sto. Niño— damaged by floodwaters brought by Queenie last year, received a total of P1.4 million from the development fund.
Two more barangays in Argao— Calagasan and Canbanua— also received P500,000 each.
“We have great faith in you that you will use this financial aid, however small, for the benefit of the constituents in your barangay,” Gov. Hilario Davide III told the recipients, as stated in a press release on the distribution of cash assistance.
The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) approved several resolutions for the implementation of barangay projects in its regular session last March 16.
Following the receipt of cash assistance from the provincial government, most of the barangays expressed plans to reconstruct and rehabilitate roads, build multi-purpose buildings and daycare centers, and repair their respective barangay halls.
Barangay Captain Benjamin Entoma of Lumbang, Dalaguete said that the P500,000-assistance received is for the construction of a new multi-purpose building.
“We will build a two-story multi-purpose building that will have a health center at the ground floor and barangay offices on the second floor,” Entoma said.
Rep. Wilfredo Caminero (Cebu, 2nd District), who was present during the distribution, congratulated the barangay captains who came to receive the financial assistance from the provincial government.
During his speech, Caminero expressed his deep concern to deliver services to the marginal sector.
An upcoming program, which was born through the collaboration of the congressman and the governor, was introduced during Caminero’s speech.
“This program aims to provide for the needs of our farmers. We must unite them so that they will immediately receive whatever the government has to offer,” Caminero added.
The program, dubbed as “Basic Farm Implement for Marginal Farmers,” is still in the drawing-board stage.
Caminero said that this program aims to provide the basic farming tools.
Farmers who will benefit from the program are those who are involved or a member of farmers’ organizations.
The barangay captains of each barangay received the financial assistance last March 19, Wednesday, at the Boljoon covered court.
Boljoon Mayor Merlou Derama, PB members Christopher Baricuatro and Peter John Calderon were also present during the distribution.
