SWU PHINMA’s School of Design plus Communication Inspires Students to Dive Into Creative Pursuits

- December 18, 2023

Cebu City – The 2nd Cebu Creative and Communication Congress organized by Southwestern University’s School of Design plus Communication brought together students from diverse schools and universities around Cebu for an immersive and hands-on experience in the realms of Communication, Architecture, and Fine Arts.

The event culminated in a design sprint among the various students to ideate and prototype a creative solution to bring life to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

Held in Cebu Making Space, the congress aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications, as well as further promote the creative field as a lucrative and fulfilling profession. The congress invited students from The University of Cebu, Child Learning Foundation, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School, and Southwestern University PHINMA.

During the first half of the event, students had the opportunity to listen to talks from industry experts in the field of architecture, fine arts, and communication. McCann Worldgroup PH CEO, Raul M. Castro, a leader in the advertising industry, shared valuable insights on being a great storyteller and finding winning insights that connects with the audience. He tackled how crucial empathy is in making a great story.

Finally, acclaimed film director Victor Villanueva talked about Cebuano filmmaking and creativity. Victor Villanueva is the brain behind the multi-awarded film ‘Patay na si Hesus’ among his other roster of uniquely Cebuano films.

Finally, the event culminated in a design sprint among the various students to ideate and prototype a creative solution to bring life to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

“Pursuing the field of creatives has always been seen as a gamble. There’s a misconception that there is not much career opportunities in the arts. This is why we organize the CCCC every year—to show to students and Cebuanos in general that communication and the arts is a lucrative career. That they can turn their passion to profession”, said the school of design and communication’s executive director, Ria Therese Repunte.

In partnership with Cebu Making Space, Selrahco PR, and the United Architects of the Philippines, this year’s Cebu Creative and Communication Congress saw great success in promoting the value of creativity among the Cebuano youth.
