CEBU CITY, Philippines – A barred coral snake, locally known as “udto-udto” is a slender snake of short length, typically found in gardens or nearby agricultural lands in the Philippines.

While they are common in the Philippines, they are rarely spotted due to their small size and their ability to hide effectively. Barred coral snakes are also non-aggressive and would most likely evade any encounters with humans.

Recently, a netizen from Cebu shared a photo of the beautiful reptile on the Philippines Snake ID page, drawing attention to a stunning barred coral snake. This slender serpent has bright red and black colors.

Despite their attractive appearance and relatively small size, barred coral snakes are generally venomous. In fact, a bite from one of these snakes can affect your nervous system, including the control of your lungs.

According to a report from the Animals of Tanay blog, which documents wildlife species found in Sakahang Lilok, a small organic farm, Barred Coral Snakes are typically found in moist forests in lowlands and low hills.

They may also venture into nearby agricultural areas to hunt for prey. Scientifically known as Hemibungarus calligaster, they belong to the elapid family, characterized by their slender bodies and hollow fangs used for venom delivery.

These snakes primarily feed on smaller species, particularly little burrowing snakes like worm snakes and blind snakes.

While the Barred Coral Snake possesses a venomous bite, it generally avoids biting humans and will only do so if provoked or handled roughly.

Most snakebites occur accidentally, such as when someone steps on or tries to handle or kill the snake. Therefore, it’s essential to be cautious where one steps and to avoid disturbing snakes when encountered.

Like other coral snakes, the venom of the Barred Coral Snake has neurotoxic effects, affecting the nervous system, including vital functions like lung control.

If someone is bitten by a coral snake, it’s crucial to keep them calm and seek immediate medical attention, preferably at a facility equipped with respiratory support. Home remedies for snakebites are generally ineffective and can even be harmful.

Despite their generally non-aggressive nature, caution is still warranted around this species of snake. While they rarely bite, it’s important to remain respectful of their presence. These snakes are natural predators of other snakes, often seeking out species like Brahminy Blind Snakes in gardens or similar environments.

Barred Coral Snakes exhibit striking beauty, typically characterized by black and white bands. However, it’s vital to refrain from touching any snake unless one has experience with the species and can accurately identify it./ with reports from Animals of Tanay
