Public advised to clean homes amid increase in dengue cases

Health authorities called on the public to clean their surroundings amid a 20 percent increase in dengue cases in Central Visayas from January to May this year.

Dr. Jonathan Niel Erasmo, DOH-7 dengue program coordinator, said in a forum held at the City Central School that they recorded 2,045 dengue cases and nine dengue deaths for the first five months of the year.

He said this was higher than the 1,713 dengue cases and seven deaths due to dengue that they recorded for the same period last year.

Erasmo said Cebu City has the most number of dengue cases with 405 cases and two deaths caused by dengue during the five-month period.

Cebu City is followed by Lapu-Lapu City with 89 cases, Toledo City with 80 cases, Dumaguete City with 77 cases, Liloan with 63 cases, Consolacion with 60 cases, Tagbilaran City with 59 cases and Mandaue City with 57 cases.

Also in the list are Carcar City with 55 dengue cases, Balamban with 46 cases, Minglanilla with 38 dengue cases, Talisay City with 37 cases, Argao with 34 cases, Sibulan with 34 cases, Jagna, Bohol with 31 cases, City of Naga with 26 cases, Ayungon with 24 cases, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental with 24 cases, Compostela town in Cebu with 23 cases and Carmen town, Cebu with 22 cases.

The DOH-7 said the youngest victim of dengue fever is a four-day-old child while the oldest is 91-year-old.
