Jarrid Famous put up a monstrous performance to power the GlobalPort Batang Pier to a 102-94 win over the Kia Carnival yesterday in the 40th PBA Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Famous scored 30 points and collared 37 rebounds, the most rebounds in the last 30 years or since Ginebra’s Michael Hackett plucked 45 against Great Taste in the 1985 Third Conference.
With Famous dominating the boards, GlobalPort chalked up a 68-40 rebounding edge as the Batang Pier sealed a spot in the quarterfinal round with their sixth win in 10 games.
Apart from GlobalPort, also assured of a quarterfinal spots are the San Miguel Beermen, Alaska Aces and Barako Bull.
Though already assured of a spot in the next round, those four teams still need to win their remaining games since the top four quarterfinalists will have twice-to-beat advantages against their lower-ranked foes.
The 30-30 performance was more than enough to offset Famous’ 11 turnovers, which equaled the third all-time record among imports.
Terrence Romeo gave the Carnival more headaches as he tallied 27 markers.
Kia import Hamady N’Diaye finished with a PBA career-best 29 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots but couldn’t save Kia from its fourth loss in eight games. Karl Dehesa and Joshua Webb tallied career-highs 20 and 15 points, respectively.
BOLTS DOWN KINGS
In the main game, the Meralco Bolts boosted their playoff aspirations with a 102-99 beating of the Barangay Ginebra Kings.
Andre Emmett collected 34 points as the Bolts bagged their fifth victory in nine outings.
“That was a thrilling win for us, a gutsy win,” said Meralco coach Norman Black. “It was a great game between two teams that really needed a win. This has given us a little bit of breathing room playing against Rain or Shine in the next game”
The Kings absorbed a second straight defeat and dropped to 3-6.
