A 17-YEAR-OLD boy is facing trial for allegedly snatching a pair of earrings worth P8,000 from a pedestrian in downtown Cebu City.
The Cebu City Prosecutors’ Office charged the boy with theft.
Bail was recommended at P12,000.
Social workers said the minor “acted with discernment” when he committed the offense.
Under Republic Act 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, “a child above 15 years but below eighteen 18 years of age shall likewise be exempt from criminal liability and be subjected to
an intervention program, unless he/she has acted with discernment.”
The boy was accused of stealing the gold earrings of a woman near a supermarket in downtown Cebu City on Nov. 26, 2013.
In her affidavit, the victim said she and another woman, were about to cross the street when the boy suddenly approached and snatched her earrings.
She cried for help and a policeman arrested the boy.
