Debris from riprap alarms Mabolo residents

RESIDENTS of barangay Mabolo near the boundary of barangay Hipodromo in Cebu City voiced alarm over the collapse of  a concrete riprap near the exit of the Ayala Access Road along MJ Cuenco Avenue.

Cesar Gloria, who lives just across the area where the incident happened, said the area had not been cleared of the debris that blocked the creek as of 7 p.m. yesterday.

“They just placed a yellow line in the area but it hasn’t been cleared. We’re afraid here because even a little rain may cause flooding because the creek is already small and debris worsened it,” Gloria said.

The Gloria family owns the Mabolo Bam-i House located across Rolher Marble Supply where the incident happened.

Some materials from the marble supplier fell into the creek after the riprap collapsed.

Cleared

Gloria said they hope the Cebu City government can send a backhoe to the area and clear the debris.

He said the creek  serves as a catchbasin of floodwater from neighboring barangays and easily overflows.

His wife sent a text message to City Councilor Dave Tumulak who heads the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC) yesterday morning.

As of yesterday evening, Tumulak said they have yet to check the area if it was already cleared.

“It’s being worked on by a contractor of Ayala since they also have a dredging project in the creek which connects to the Mahiga creek. Our personnel are still checking the area if it’s already cleared,” Tumulak said.

He said Ayala will be clearing the debris.

Engr. Dodong Diola of the City Engineering Office said they will ask the management of Cebu Business Park to lend heavy equipment to haul debris and other materials from the creek.

Diola said they will check the structural stability of nearby buildings to make sure they don’t collapse in case of more rainfall.
