IN an effort to curb controversial incidents like the walkout that marred the exhibition game between the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the University of San Carlos Warriors in Medellin town last April, the upcoming Bogo City Mayor’s Cup Preseason Basketball Tournament will be sanctioned by the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
That means any untoward events shall be dealt with accordingly by the league itself.
This was confirmed by the league’s longtime commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy who said that should any player, coach or team err, their sanctions will be served during the new season which opens on August 2.
The walkout was instigated by the Green Lancers in their match versus the Warriors in April which led to the suspension of UV head coach Gary Cortes, a sanction that has since been lifted by the school’s brass.
“Actually, ang schools ang ni-duol nako para ani. This will not only protect the players but the schools themselves from any untoward incidents. The games will be officiated by Cesafi referees and will be supervised by deputy commissioner Danny Duran,” said Tiukinhoy.
Incidentally, UV and USC duel in the main game at tomorrow’s opening at the Bogo City Sports Complex. That match comes after the opening game between the University of Cebu Webmasters and the comebacking University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers at 6 p.m.
Also competing is the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Teams will play a single round-robin with the top two teams advancing to the finals on July 25. The champion team will win P80,000 while the runner-up bags P60,000. Third and fourth placers will get P40,000 and P20,000, respectively. The fifth-ranked team will pocket P10,000.
