Bayfront shocks Gaisano Capital in Shaaba hoops
BAYFRONT Hotel Cebu leaned on a solid second half performance to upset the Gaisano Capital, 64-51, in Division A action in the 20th Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) on Wednesday night at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue.
Gaisano Capital was slightly ahead, 25-23, at halftime when Bayfront found its groove and outscored its opponents, 22-11, in the third to fashion out a 45-37 lead.
Gaisano Capital tried to rally in the fourth but were stopped at every turn by the offensive explosion of the Cabahug siblings – Eduard and Elmer – who combined to score the bulk of the Bayfront’s points and help the team notch its second win in five games.
Eduard Cabahug had 26 points while Elmer, the former University of the Visayas and Ateneo de Manila Team B wingman, contributed 16. Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw scored 13 points for Gaisano, which dropped to a tie for third place at 3-2 (win-loss), while Alfonso Doyon logged in 12.
Tying Gaisano Capital at third was the Cebu Landmasters, who earned a hard-fought 70-66 overtime victory over the resilient Filmon Prince Medallion.
The two teams were neck-and-neck in regulation and headed to the extra session tied at 61-all.
The Landmasters pulled out all the stops in overtime to come out on top.
Kyle Valmoria led the Landmasters with 18 points while Jet Wahing and Daryle Tan each had 14. The loss, Filmon Prince Medallion’s fourth in five games, spoiled the 33-point explosion of Jonathan Cimafranca.
In Division B, Dynamic Power and defending champions RDAK Transporters kept their spots atop the standings as the former beat Autolab, 52-43, while the latter whooped White Gold Club, 58-48.
