Don’t count out the defending college football champions University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors just yet.

The Warriors kept their title hopes alive in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament after handing the top-seeded University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars their first defeat via a 2-1 decision yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.

The win was USC’s first in this year’s tournament after five games. The Warriors have two losses and two draws for a total of five points in the standings.

With this development, the Warriors have climbed out from the bottom and improved to third place, leaving last year’s runner-up University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers at the last place with no wins to show but just two draws and two losses.

USJ-R, meanwhile,  tasted its first defeat after starting the season with three wins and a draw.

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters is at second place with two wins and three draws while the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Booters is at fourth with five points after both teams settled for a scoreless draw yesterday.

In the secondary division, the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves booked a ticket to the championship round opposite Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) after both defeated their respective foes yesterday.

DBTC thrashed USC-BED, 6-0, while SHS-AdC defeated USP-F, 5-0. The championship match will be on Wednesday.
