Capitol teams to Daanbantayan

By: Victor Anthony V. Silva October 04,2015 - 12:43 AM

The Cebu provincial government sent teams to Daanbantayan yesterday to conduct misting operations in dengue-prone areas there and to brief barangay officials on how to address the health hazard.

A 4-year-old girl from barangay Poblacion succumbed to dengue last month.

The Regional Health Unit (RHU)  recorded 78 cases of dengue in teh town.

Daanbantayan Mayor Augusto Corro stressed the need to clean surroundings to combat dengue in a briefing to barangay captains, tanods, health workers and other local government officials.

“We need to remind our constituents that regardless of the situation, cleanliness should be part of our everyday lives,” he told  Cebu Daily News in a telephone interview.

Also present during yesterday’s briefing were Provincial Health Office head Dr. Cynthia Genosolango and Disaster Office head Baltazar Tribunalo Jr.

The mayor  said Genosolango came in the morning to check the town’s facilities.

Dr. Wyben Briones of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) worked closely with the teams for a larvicide operation, a method that uses chemicals to kill mosquito larvae in their breeding grounds.

Corro said that since the dengue outbreak in the town, the local government has been more conscious in efforts to clean  surroundings.

The town conducted cleanup drives in four barangays including Poblacion, Aguho, Lanao and Pajo since September.

Following the recent rise of the town’s number of dengue cases, the local government decided to extend the drives to swampy areas and other locations with stagnant water.

Yesterday, the Provincial Health Office conducted a misting operation in barangay Poblacion.

Corro said the initial focus of the misting operations are in the area where the most number of dengue cases  are found but will widen the scope of the operations to the whole town.

The provincial government lent three misting machines for Daanbantayan’s  use.

“I expect this will not worsen. With our information drives, the numbers will drop,” said Corro.
