ACTION  in the 25th Cebu City Olympics officially blasts off today in various venues around the city.

The annual multi-sporting meet pitting different schools in Cebu City opened yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

Present in the opening ceremony was Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and top Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City officials.

Highlights of yesterday’s event were the field demonstration of different Cebu City public high schools and the crowning of the Mr. and Ms. Cebu City Olympics.

The winning athletes and teams will make up the Team Cebu City Niños that will compete in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet in February 2016 in the City of Naga, south Cebu.  Winners in the CVIRAA will then make up the core of the Region VII team for the Palarong Pambansa in Albay.

Some of the events already started last week, including taekwondo and swimming. Overall defending champions University of San Carlos (USC) and former champions University of Cebu (UC) lead the unofficial medal tally after last week’s events.

USC partially leads the medal standings with 17 gold medals while UC has eight golds.

Meanwhile, Abellana National School’s (Unit 9) Alessandra Danicka Demillo was crowned Ms.  Cebu City Olympics secondary division while Sharveen Hafeel of the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (south district) was named Mr. Cebu City Olympics 2015.

In the elementary division, John Darryl Niño Pelayo of Three H. Redwood Academy of the south district and Carmel Perales of Labangon Elementary School also of the south district won Mr. and Ms. Cebu City Olympics, respectively.

Aside from the coronation of the Mr. and Miss Cebu City Olympics, seven former Cebu City Olympics standouts were recognized as part of the 25th anniversary of the annual meet.
