THE Rotary Club of Dumaguete South (RCDS) has launched the ‘UrbanGreen’ project to promote and establish an agro-forestry park and food production while mitigating the effects of global warming in the city.

In an orientation-seminar, club president Atty. Eliezer Escorial, along with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources officer Charlie Fabre, presented the project to school principals and teachers at the Department of Education (DepEd) Dumaguete office.

Escorial said the project will be established in various parts of the city through a mini agro-forestry park planted with appropriate tree species including ornamental plants.

Escorial said the schools are encouraged to also produce vegetables for food production using organic technology.

Under the proposed program, RCDS in collaboration with the Dumaguete City government and other line agencies will convert idle land in the city into green belts to promote vertical gardens on selected buildings and schools.

In support of Rotary Club Dumaguete South’s  ‘UrbanGreen’ project, Green Farm Systems manager Alex Amor has also shared organic technology on bio-fertilization and greenbase vermicompost to school officials.

Fabre said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) can provide seedlings as soon as the multi-million mechanized nursery in Banban, Ayungon will be completed. The machine is expected to produce 250,000 seeded bags per day. The DENR is targeting to plant 15.5 million seedlings in the first quarter of 2016 in Negros Oriental.
