Pastel Perfection

YOU’VE heard of Pantone, right?

For the uninitiated, let me break it down for you really quick. Pantone Inc. is a corporation known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), a proprietary color space used in various industries such as printing as well as in the manufacturing of plastic, paint and fabric.

They started declaring annual color picks back in 2000 and introduced the first-ever Color of the Year, which was Cerulean (a light dull shade of blue) and this was followed by a bevy of shades every New Year—Tiger Lily, Sand Dollar, Blue Iris, Mimosa, Honeysuckle, and last year’s color, Marsala.

Traditionally, there should only be one color declared per year, but for 2016, it’s a tie between Rose Quartz and Serenity. Simply put, they are light pink and light blue—delicate hues that many adults are intimidated by for the simple reason that it’s not as mature/serious as the neutrals black, gray, or camel.

There are simple ways of wearing these colors without having to look like you just raided a toddler’s closet. It’s all about achieving balance.

Tailored pieces and classic silhouettes can definitely do that, and toning down the fancy could  give the look  a more polished appearance.

The trick with Rose Quartz and Serenity is to pair them with neutral shades like gray (best), beige, white and black (edgy).

The subtle pop of pastel show hints of feminine vulnerability. For the brave, a monochromatic outfit will surely make a lasting yet subtle statement, but if you are feeling extra fearless and want to make an entrance, baby blue perhaps? To those who have commitment issues with color,

I suggest applying them in small doses—accessories can instantly jazz up your basics whether it be a rose-colored beanie or a nice baby blue bag, or even just a pastel lip color or nails can go a long way without being in-your-face. One can always incorporate trends without having to go overboard. It’s all about making the right choices and taking  time to edit in front of the mirror.
