Mactan Cebu International Airport concessionaires delighted arriving passengers and guests over the weekend with their colorful costumes and upbeat Sinulog dance in the first ever “Sinulog sa Airport” Street Dancing Competition organized by GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC).
During the two-day event on January 16 and 17, airlines, ground handlers, food and beverage concessionaires and government offices were invited to field their official Sinulog dance contingent to perform along the parade route from the domestic to international arrivals area.
SkyLogistics/Philippine Airlines (PAL) bagged the Best Sinulog Performance during the two-day event with a cash prize of P50,000.
Best Street Dance, with a prize of P25,000, went to the Office for Transportation Security of the Department of Transportation and Communication while Best in Costume went to Jin Air/Miascor Ground Handling Corp. with prize of P25,000.
The contingents were judged based on choreography, execution, thematic unity and customer delight.
“This ‘Sinulog sa Airport’ is a wonderful welcome for all passengers and event airport stakeholders where they already feel the Sinulog vibe once they land in Cebu,” said event judge and master choreographer Val Sandiego, who manages the Sandiego Dance Company.
Among the efforts by GMCAC to inject the Sinulog vibe all around the airport terminal included the distribution of Sinulog survival kits — consisting of fan, whistle, tissue and a biscuit — as well as setting up a photo wall for all passengers to take their souvenir Sinulog photos.
Sponsors for the event were Smart Communications and Cebu Pacific Air.
“No other festival combines celebration and devotion like Sinulog. This piety runs deep in every Cebuano and the same is true at MCIA. The collaboration among airport stakeholders really brought this event to life. It’s the perfect start and end to your Sinulog adventure and it’s sure to get better every year,” said GMCAC president Louie Ferrer.
