YOUTH volunteers of the “tsinelas (slippers) leadership” program of the late Interior and Local Governments secretary Jesse Robredo had a pleasant surprise when they were visited by his widow yesterday.

Camarines Rep. and vice presidential candidate Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo dropped by  the Cebu for Leni headquarters that housed the volunteers at Gorordo Avenue.

One of the volunteers, Jamil Faisal Adiong of Lanao del Sur, said Leni’s simplicity and accessibility were among her qualities that won him over during his first year as a college student in Cebu City.

“Politicians have those privileges of being in position like  owning luxury cars. But she is different. You would see how she lives a simple lifestyle,” he said.

Robredo flew to  Cebu City from Cagayan de Oro City to attend the Statio Orbis Mass at the South Road Properties.

“It’s very touching. I always follow the Cebu for Leni on Facebook. But when I saw that there’s a training for youth volunteers, it’s like bringing the program to a new level. I’m lucky since others had to hire but the volunteers are already there. All are very passionate, very committed. It’s a big thing,” she said.

Robredo was with her youngest daughter Jill in Cebu to attend the closing Mass of the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC).

Robredo said her family always attends Sunday Mass but two other daughters were not available. She also went with Marge Bahinting, wife of pilot Jessup Bahinting who died in the plane crash with her husband Jesse.
