THE REIGNING champions Mortaflex shrugged off a tough challenge by the recently crowned United Architects Basketball Club Corporate Cup titleholder Bio-Fresh+ to emerge victorious, 61-50, in overtime during the opening of the Architects + Engineers Basketball Association 2nd Davies Paints Cup on Saturday night at the University of San Carlos gym.
It was a hard-earned victory for the undermanned Mortaflex squad, who came in to the game with just eight players.
Still, with the game heading to overtime after the fourth period ended at 43-all, Mortaflex found their second wind and outgunned Bio-Fresh+, 18-7, during that stretch to come away with the win.
First Davies Paints Cup MVP Ed Macasling paced the winning team with 15 points while Jonas Panerio added 14. Niel Benedicto chipped in 12. Bullstrong forward Ayi Armenion led the Bio-Fresh+ with 16 points but got little help from the rest of his teammates.
In the other matches, Sun & Rain dominated Elastogel Extreme, 75-63, behind the 30-point explosion of wingman Ferdinand Tiro. Megacryl500 on the other hand, nearly doubled-up Mondo Skimcoat as they won going away, 83-44.
