A Dutch national was found dead inside his rented room in a pension house in barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City.

Police said they believed that Dieter Friedrich Meyer, 66, was murdered inside his room in Turtle’s Nest Book Café and Gallery along Gorordo Avenue.

Meyer, a tourist and pensioner, sustained bruises on his head, face and arm.

A piece of cloth believed to be a pillowcase was found stuffed in his mouth when his lifeless body was discovered past 8 a.m. yesterday.

“A cloth might have been stuffed in his mouth to keep him from shouting as he was hit by a hard object on the head. The owner and some staff claimed that they did not hear any commotion upstairs because there was loud music at the first floor which served as a bar,” SPO2 Wetzel Berry, homicide investigator, told Cebu Daily

News in Cebuano.

Scene of the Crime Operatives found a bruise at the back of Meyer’s head and his right eye, suggesting he was hit with a   blunt object. SOCO dusted the room for fingerprints  and took  samples of blood found in the room for DNA matching.

Police, who found signs of struggle inside the room with things in disarray, are trying to determine if  anything is missing.

Berry said Meyer rented a room in the pension house two months after he was allegedly told to transfer from a nearby apartelle for allegedly failing to settle his bills.

Meyer’s girlfriend, who  was located  in Talisay City,  told Berry that she was not aware that  Meyer had enemies.

She said she went to the café last week to return Meyer’s iPhone, which she turned over to one of the pension house’s staff to give to Meyer, since he was not around at the time.

Investigation showed that Cecilia Matedios, a waitress of the establishment, together with the cook, Renjay Sanjorjo, found Meyer’s body on the floor when they opened his room because he didn’t respond to their wake-up call.

The victim’s body was brought to Cebu Rolling Hills Memorial Chapels and will be autopsied.

Fernando Bertulfo of the funeral home said they have contacted the Dutch embassy about Meyer’s death and will submit a full report to them.
