The partylist group Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) called for the creation of a Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation to help train young athletes from the provinces.

Partylist Rep. Mark Sambar said sports development programs in the country were neglected since the renaming and re-organization of the Department of Education (DepEd), formerly known as the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS).

By creating a department level agency for sports development, the national government can focus on harnessing new talents and the development of athletes from the countryside.

The department would also oversee the establishment of sports facilities in the provinces to reduce cost of bringing athletes to Manila for their trainings.

Sambar was here on Sunday for their Cebu launch.

The group launched caravans in Mandaue City and Consolacion town in northern Cebu on Sunday morning.
