Jette Calderon solidified his reputation as Cebu’s best karter as he nabbed the KT Expert class crown in the 7th and final leg of the 2014 Kartzone Superkart Series last Saturday at the Kartzone race track in brgy. Panagdait, Cebu City.
With chief rival Joseph Rojo opting not to race in spite of his fighting chance at the coveted crown, Calderon found a worthy opponent in none other than the 2013 National Karter of the Year Daniel Miranda, who flew down south in search of action.
The Cebuano-French karter got more than he bargained for as Calderon took advantage of the former’s technical blunder in the final heat to come away with the intense win.
Miranda had pole position in the final heat but Calderon made his move in the seventh lap, where he took over the lead and kept it until the end to win the checkered flag.
The difference-maker was the decision that was made before the race, according to race organizer Kim Limgenco.
With the unpredictable race conditions, the track had several patches of wet and dry spots scattered all around. With these in mind, Miranda opted to go with rain tires while Calderon chose to use dry slick ones.
That proved to be a wise choice for Calderon as the rain stopped and the track dried up, giving him maximum traction to leave Miranda in the dust.
Calderon finished the 25-lap race in 14 minutes, 38.116 seconds, a full 10 seconds ahead of Miranda. JT Gullas was in third place.
KARTER OF
THE YEAR
With his 45-point haul in the final leg, Calderon claimed the Karter of the Year crown with his total of 335 points.
In other classes, Seven Aleman blew out his engine in the final heat to give the Formula Cadet win to Raprap Gutierrez. Still, Aleman won the series title with 299 points.
In the Mini-ROK, Liam Sacal won the checkered flag over Jarond Mesina but the latter captured the overall title with 304 points.
In the Formula Honda Novice, Manu Miranda dominated from start to finish to win the 7th leg title. Limgenco won the class crown with his 323-point total.
The Honda expert class saw Lord Seno winning the race but Frederick Cortes won the overall crown with 292 points.
The KT Novice title went the way of Earl Taborada who also won Rookie of the Year honors. Vince Rojo though, won the overall crown with 265 points.
In the KT Masters, Cortes staved off Rei Aleman to take the checkered flag but it was Panpan Reroma who won the overall title with 319 points.
