Law school deans mobilize support for exam venue
LAW school deans of the Visayas and Mindanao have until March 31 this year to gather signatures of 1,000 law graduates who are willing to take the bar exams in Cebu City.
“Our goal is not only to get the fresh (law) graduates take the Bar in Cebu. We’re also targeting retakers, those who were unsuccessful in previous bar exams due to the difficulties of holding them in Manila,” retired Court of Appeals Justice Portia Aliño Hormachuelos said in yesterday’s press conference.
“I talked with some of them. 1,000 is actually a small number if retakers will be notified,” said Hormachuelos, dean of the University of the Visayas’s College of Law.
She said law school deans from Visayas and Mindanao are conducting a survey to find out whether there are enough examinees who are willing to take the bar exams in Cebu City.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco, chairman of the 2016 bar examinations, earlier expressed willingness to hold the bar exams outside Manila, specifically in Cebu City.
However, he said there must be at least 1,000 examinees who will take the bar exams in Cebu City.
Law schools in Cebu and other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao want the High Court to hold the bar exams outside Manila.
“A bar examinee (from Visayas and Mindanao) usually spends P100,000 if the exams would be held in Manila,” Hormachuelos said.
