The University of San Carlos Press yesterday launched “The Cebu Almanac 2016,” the inaugural publication on facts and figures about Cebu.
Professor Frank Largo, project head, said they aim to update the publication yearly.
“This is really information in one location if you want to replicate what we did, you have to spend several months of going through channels and so on and so forth but what we have done is we brought you this information some of which is very new but some are the latest we could get. Something that is very convenient for the consumer, serious researcher,” Largo said during the launching yesterday at the Ayala Center Cebu.
An exhibition of graphic panels containing snippets from the book accompanied the launching.
The book contains Cebu’s top news stories in 2015 as well as articles on the economy, population, health and healthcare, education, nature and environment, business and industry, infrastructure, tourism, history and culture, politics and governance.
Professor Fernando Fajardo, a former assistant regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), discussed the features of the Cebu economy.
Dr. Socorro Gultiano of USC Office of Population Studies discussed the population’s characteristics.
The Health Section presents the various resources for health and restoration.
The Education Section looks at the state of the province’s education resources and the transition to the K-12 system and its implications.
The Nature and Environment Section presents information on the quantity and quality of Cebu’s natural resources. Data on Cebu’s water, land, air resources are presented.
The Business and Industry Section starts with a feature on Cebu’s real estate industry, while the infrastructure section provides information on power, water and communications facilities.
Tourist attractions are listed per municipality and city in the Tourism Section while Politics and Governance section is a compilation of information on local government and national government infrastructure in the province.
Largo said that compiling the almanac has been a daunting effort. He said he hoped to see a much better and improved almanac for 2017.
Brian Baculan, a resident of Minglanilla who currently works in Singapore, said he purchased the Cebu Almanac because the book could help him promote Cebu.
The first copy will go to the National Library of the Philippines, the second will be presented to the National Archives of the Philippines, the third copy will be presented to the US Library of Congress, the fourth copy will be presented to the City of Cebu through Mayor Michael Rama, the fifth copy will be presented to the
Province of Cebu through Gov. Hilario Davide III and the sixth copy will be presented to the USC Cebuano Studies Center.
