No road closure at UP Cebu Hall for presidential debate

THE roads surrounding the UP Cebu Performing Arts Hall, where the presidential debate will be held on Sunday, will remain open to vehicular traffic.

Rey Gealon, executive director of the Cebu City Transportation Office, said they decided to allow free-flowing traffic in the area and discourage roadside parking.

If they close a portion of Gorordo Avenue located in front of the University of the Philippines Cebu campus, Gealon said vehicular traffic is expected to build up at the nearby Kamagong Street that would serve as the only alternative access road.

He said CCTO already decided on the proposal of the organizers of the debate even without receiving a formal request from them yet.

To make sure that traffic is flowing in the area and secure pedestrians, Gealon said they would deploy 30 traffic enforcers and parking attendants during the debate. Steel barriers will also be set up especially secure pedestrians.

“The marching order of the mayor is to make sure that pedestrians are safe in crossing the streets. There will be no road closure,” Gealon said./Reporter Jose Santino S. Bunachita
