RESIDENTS near a private dumpsite in Barangay Umapad, Mandaue City were relieved after firefighters managed to put out a fire that struck the area at 1 p.m. yesterday.

Jerry Baticolon, the 28-year-old caretaker of the property where the dumpsite is located, said he believed the fire was caused by the noon heat which may have ignited the garbage consisting mostly of plastic items.

But some residents in the area admitted to burning garbage at the site to help clear the area and sort out materials that could still be sold.

Florentino Nimor, head of the City Planning and Development of Mandaue City, said he had been calling the lot owners to warn them of the dumpsite to no avail.
